How to Calm Anxiety Before Bed for Kids

Nov 26, 2019 | Parenting

If your child is experiencing anxiety before bed, then you know hard it can be. Children who are struggling with anxiety will be agitated, restless and have more tantrums. They may refuse to go to school or bed and have meltdowns.

Children with sleep anxiety may have difficulty falling asleep. Anxiety before bed for kids is very common. They often ask for a parent to stay with them until they fall asleep. There may be tears and constant worries about what could happen. One hallmark sign of anxiety is “What If?” questions. The brain tends to become overactive in its imagination of scary events. This active worrying can make bedtime a hard time for kids experiencing nighttime anxiety. As a parent, when your child is having a bad time, then you are having a bad time too. But, there’s a solution!

How can you help? Here are a few ways to calm anxiety before bed for your little one:

    • Establish a bedtime routine. You should keep it simple and consistent. Kids love consistency and it’ll help them know what to expect each night.
    • Give them a warm bath before bed. This can help them calm down.
    • Read the Magical Order of Brave Knights storybook to your child before bed. Give them Sir William the Bear to snuggle with at night. Tell them to give their worries to him and he will protect them.
    • Give your child the magical projecting flashlight. Tell them to chase away anything in the room that frightens them with the light. The magical projecting light helps empower them to clear their own room of what scares them. This is an integral part of helping them be in control of their fears.
